Make a Great Taco Even Better With Jackfruit

Rivals for the title include a 144-pounder reportedly sighted at a jackfruit festival in the southern Indian state Kerala in 2010. Kerala is where the American poet and essayist Aimee Nezhukumatathil first tasted jackfruit, at age 8. Then they watched her devour jackfruit and understood that she was one of them after all. But in 2020, when grocery supplies were running low during the pandemic, she spotted canned young jackfruit at the local store. “It’s about as close as you can get to tearing into flesh,” Nezhukumatathil says.

Vladimir V. Putin’s vision of Russia — successful, innovative and borderless — is on display at one of Moscow’s biggest tourist attractions, a Stalin-era exhibition center that currently houses a sleek showcase called Russia 2024. The exhibition promotes what the Kremlin portrays as Russia’s achievements in the past two decades, roughly the period Mr. Putin has been in power, and his promises for the future after he secures another six-year term in rubber-stamp elections this weekend. The exhibition is in many ways a microcosm of a country whose people largely — at least in public — avert their gaze from the big and bloody war in Ukraine that Mr. Putin started more than two years ago. The centerpiece is a grand hall housing pavilions featuring all the Russian regions, including five illegally annexed from Ukraine. Visitors to one pavilion are greeted by two LED screens attached to robotic arms displaying tulip fields that portray the region of Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, as calm and peaceful.

Flower Arrangements Are Reaching New Heights

“I have so much admiration for florists who can make haphazard, wild arrangements,” says Miguel Yatco, 30, the floral artist behind the Brooklyn-based studio Agos Muni. If last summer saw the culmination of a trend for sprawling, low-lying floral landscapes, Yatco’s work represents an aesthetic about-face. But these works are also defined by their height, their long stems often extending above or through equally elongated vessels. Compared to the bouffant-like silhouettes of Bosschaert’s assemblages, Boutemy’s were narrow, continuing the line of the cylindrical Venetian bubble-glass vases that held them. “Rigor and clarity are the most important things,” Boutemy says, and an elongated shape means “each flower remains visible and each gives strength to another.”

"Bitcoin reclaiming its all-time high yet again shows it is never going away," said Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital. Catalysts driving the surge in the cryptocurrency include the U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs that started trading earlier this year, along with the tightening bitcoin supply ahead of the late April "halving." "The odds have always been against bitcoin," Thorn said, citing naysayers who have referred to it as "a bubble" and compared it to the "tulip mania" in Holland during the 1600s. "Retail interest is oftentimes momentum driven, and all-time high levels are a pivotal momentum driver for even more investment," he told CNBC. Nevertheless, U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs have brought legitimacy to it and been hugely popular, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) passing $10 billion in assets under management last week.

Robots of all kinds caused a stir on the show floor this week at the annual CES technology trade show in Las Vegas. The types of casino union jobs at risk could look drastically different five years from now, for example, when the Culinary Union's contract ends. We are filling the need in the market and we are bringing specialty coffee to more places.”But Werner said AI poses a real threat to casino union jobs that don’t require face-to-face interaction with customers — housekeeping, food preparation and cooks, for example. That's especially true for a people-pleasing tourist destination like the Las Vegas Strip, where customers expect top-notch service and experiences, including the latest trends in technology. That makes Las Vegas “a good place to test these things and see how customers react to it," he said.

Cryptocurrencies are on the rise again, helped by optimism surrounding the possible introduction of a spot bitcoin ETF. But no matter how strong this rally gets, it won't convince one of the industry's biggest critics — Warren Buffett. Bitcoin surged 10% over the past week, at one point briefly topping $30,000, as hopes grew that a spot bitcoin ETF will soon be approved. But whether a bitcoin ETF soon becomes reality or not, it won't alter the Oracle of Omaha's thesis on cryptocurrencies, which is that they are highly speculative, non-productive assets. Buffett, who once famously called bitcoin "probably rat poison squared," has compared the bitcoin phenomenon to the tulip bulb mania in the Netherlands in the early 1600s .

It has absorbed storm water without washing out, suppressed many weeds and stayed lush throughout last year’s drought. That’s a question that swirls through Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a live-action, you-go-girl fantasia about the world’s most famous doll. The movie opens with a prelude that parodies the “dawn of man” sequence in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (with girls, not ape-men), and then shifts to Barbie Land, a kaleidoscopic wonderland. There, Gerwig sets the scene and tone with Barbie (Margot Robbie) — who calls herself stereotypical Barbie — soon floating out of her Dreamhouse, as if she were being lifted by a giant invisible hand. Written by Gerwig and her partner, Noah Baumbach, the movie introduces Barbie on yet another perfect day in Barbie Land, in which dolls played by humans exist in what resembles a toyland gated community. There, framed by a painted mountain range, Barbie and a diverse group of other Barbies rule, living in homes with few exterior walls.

How to trade it Let's remember the elements of a bubble, as defined by many market historians who have written about such financial market phenomena (myself included). The public increasingly has been buying related tech stocks and associated ETFs, but we have yet to see the single-minded focus of the entire stock buying world come to bear on AI stocks. In 1999 alone, some 456 stocks went public at the height of the internet mania. If there is to be a bubble in AI, it's the early days. Also, "easy money" from the Federal Reserve, a key component of financial frenzies, is not fueling speculation in publicly traded AI shares, or any other asset class for that matter.
